The US have traditionally commanded the bulk of non-havanas, primarily due to the cuban embargo (they have to smoke something!) as well as the sheer quantum of smokers. They are the largest importer of dominicans. As a result, the majority of the "large" non-havana websites tend to be US sites.
This comes with a number of both advantages and disadvantages:
On the plus side, the variety is enormous and there is no (non-havana) cigar that you could not possibly find. Quality is exceptional, given that a lot of these websites have overstocked and there are currently millions of cigars maturing beautifully in their warehouses. Also, fakes are virtually unknown in the US, particularly as a result of strict oversight and heavy retail regulation.
On the minus side, yanks tend to deal within the US - a lot of them specifically state they don't ship overseas. Equally, personal email exchanges tend to be rare, merely due to the heavy volume of communications as a result of the number of customers.
Residing outside the US, my experience has been fairly good with http://www.phatash.com
as weel as http://www.elfumador.com/
. You are also welcome to a comprehensive list of pretty much everyone in the US as well as a few cuban sites in http://www.cigargroup.com/weblist/ret.htm
. Please note that this list is hardly updated in any meaningful frequency, so some of these sites may be down.
Happy to recommend some specific non-havana smokes as well, if you wish. I switched almost entirely to dominicans in 1999-2002. Back to havanas for a while now, but back then both construction and consistency were appalling.
